Welcome to Created ByJMJ - the home of almost* everything that's created by JMJ.
Here you'll find many of JMJ's paintings, each with a quirky title. JMJ's paintings have been quoted as being "scenes one could step into and explore." JMJ paints in vibrant acrylics on canvas. On deep frame canvases, JMJ adds extra elements to the sides of the canvas. Each is signed underneath and JMJ adds in different elements with each new painting. Look out for water that appears to flow (a trick of the eye), stylised clouds, alternative settings, unusual architecture and little green boats; all to catch the eye and spark one's imagination. Another quote used for JMJ "A brain I'd like to sit inside, for an hour, when creativity is taking place." JMJ has a condition called Dyspraxia. It reflects in his painting style and unusual choice of title for each painting; often, titles are plays on words, almost sounding like something familiar. Subject choices reflect JMJ's sense of fun, playing with settings, colours and removing unnecessary adornments. JMJ paints exclusively from the dining table; looking out onto lush verdant gardens JMJ maintains, photographs and films for Instagram and YouTube.
Who is JMJ? JMJ is John Martin Jackson. Born in 1972, he lives in the ex-coal mining village of Royston, South Yorkshire, where, to quote him, "the light is particularly good for painting." When not painting, gardening, photographing nature (Instagram: @paintedbyjmj) and creating filmettes and 'quick clips' for his YouTube channel (Quickclips ByJMJ), JMJ works at Leeds City College in the Learning Support team. A PGCE (PCET) qualified Functional Skills teacher, JMJ specialises in Dyslexia, mental health solutions to learning barriers and his 'party trick' spotting support need; a natural skill that has enabled JMJ to enrich the learning of students and colleagues alike. JMJ is his team's Health & Wellbeing Champion and their EDI (equality, diversity and inclusion) champion. A former EDI leader, JMJ also contributes to the staff DAN (disability and neuro-diversity) forum, amongst other support networks, and uses excellent networking and communication skills to share best practice, through creativity. Yet, he says, JMJ's proudest moment remains winning his Blue Peter, aged 12. It was for his ideas as to how land could be developed after the 1984 Liverpool International Garden Festival. The badge would allow JMJ a second visit, for free, and plant the seeds of his 3 main passions - gardening, painting and photography. In 2011, JMJ co-founded, with Karl Greenwood, the Facebook group - Festival Gardens, Liverpool (Stoke, Glasgow, Gateshead and Ebbw Vale) - to celebrate all things 'garden festival' and the partial rejuvination of Festival Gardens park in Liverpool. The group is home to the National Collection & Archive of Garden Festival festivia (a word 'created by JMJ' to mean - garden festival memorabilia).
JMJ returned to painting in 2006, having not touched a brush since quitting an A Level Art course because his teacher said JMJ had "...no talent for painting what is in front of you." JMJ wanted to be creative and bend the rules of where objects could be set, since 2006 he has done just that and developed his own unique style. In 2012, JMJ was offered his first exhibition space, Chantry bridge chapel, Wakefield, as part of the July Artwalk, by local artist Linda Golding. This led to a further 6 highly successful Summer exhibitions, at various places of interest, around Wakefield; the final one being a four month, triple-extended, exhibition in the offices of Wakefield BID. JMJ is returning to exhibiting this year, with his paintings adorning the tea room walls at the Maurice Dobson museum and heritage centre, in Darfield.
Besides painting art, JMJ also creates exclusively limited edition merchandise; each item with its own quirky product title. Fans of JMJ's paintings can choose between: Fobbed Off key fobs, Magnetix fridge magnets, WearArt badges, Coaster Posters coasters, Mugged mugs, Coaster Poster paper weights and card collections - Forestationery and Happy _____day (handmade), plus Present Day and Christmas Cottage (prints from JMJ's paintings Present Day - wrapped presents - and Christmas Cottage - a long empty shop unit, in Thurlstone, re-imagined as a Christmas shop). All names, the ByJMJ logo (based on JMJ's painting The Grand Entrance - 2 tile panels at Potternewton Heights, Leeds) and all associated images and promotional material come under the umbrella of... Below are the 'three graces', JMJ's three most inspirational paintings. Left to right: The Grand Entrance - Potternewton Heights' entrance and foyer tile panels inspired JMJ's ByJMJ logo design. Present Day - JMJ was inspired by the hand-painted advertising posters, from before the 1970s. The idea would be that JMJ could create bespoke cards for special occasions. Christmas Cottage - based on a long derelict shop unit in Thurlstone, JMJ wanted to create a festive range of cards.
