By the time JMJ created this painting, his style was almost fully developed and he wanted to concentrate on putting the sense of a real place into a painting. Clough Ellis' Italianate architectural village, on the edge of an estuary, in Wales, wasn't quite JMJ's inspiration for this painting. Instead, it was inspired by Clough Ellis' original plan that the village should be built on an outcrop or manmade/reclaimed parcel of land. Looking left to right, we see the castle above the village, the oriental bridge from the woodland garden and Portmeirion village perched on an island. Note the little green boat? This would be replicated again in several of JMJ's paintings. 1/8/2022: Seven so far, JMJ thinks.
